Helping Joan live well with arthritis

Joan Snyder RESIZED

There’s lots of ways to manage your arthritis to ensure you get the most out of life.

But for Joan Snyder, the secret ingredient has been exercise.

Joan has lived with osteoarthritis in her hands, knees, hips and feet for several years but found that her symptoms had become harder to manage around the time she turned 80, especially after developing gout in recent years as well.

So, she decided to give the Brain x Body Fitness Studio (BBFS) at Unley a go.

Attending the studio twice a week, Joan has worked with our team of qualified Exercise Physiologists to develop an exercise program tailored specifically to her needs and goals.

“I feel this exercise class has improved my arthritis a whole lot, my friends tell me how much better I am walking and moving,” she said.

“I have osteopenia (low bone density) as well, so coming to BBFS has made a huge difference in allowing me to move and get around.”

Exercise is just one of the measures Joan has taken to help manage her symptoms.

Last year, Joan also took part in our ‘10 Steps For Living Well With Arthritis’ program which provided her with a whole range of tips she could implement at home, like adjusting her diet and adopting pacing to find a balance between rest and activity.

“It was a really, really great program and I learnt a lot of things and found it very helpful,” she said.

“I wouldn’t mind going through it again a second time, it was that good. I found out all kinds of things that I didn’t know about arthritis.

“Through the support of BBFS and the 10 Steps program, what The Hospital Research Foundation Group has done for me has been excellent.”
