Your Hydrotherapy FAQs Answered

DSC07725

Hydrotherapy offers a unique approach to managing arthritis and related conditions that is low-impact and gentle on the joints. If you’re considering warm water exercise or have questions about its benefits and programs, explore our selection of frequently asked questions to help you make an informed decision.

What is hydrotherapy, and how does it help with arthritis?

This unique form of exercise involves exercises performed in warm water, providing a supportive environment that reduces stress on joints due to the anti-gravity properties of water. The natural resistance of water helps increase strength, balance, and mobility, making it ideal for individuals with arthritis while being joint-friendly

Is the program right for me?

Hydrotherapy can be beneficial for people with many types of arthritis. It is particularly helpful for people:

  • with arthritis in several joints as all joints can be exercised at once
  • with conditions affecting feet, knees, hips and back
  • preparing for or recovering from joint replacement surgery
  • who find it difficult or painful to exercise on land.

Some conditions may prevent you from participating in warm water exercise, such as:

  • Open wounds
  • Infections (urinary, skin, eye, ear)
  • Incontinence
  • Dizziness or fainting

Always consult your doctor before starting any exercise program.

I’m not a swimmer, can I still join in?

You don’t need to be a confident swimmer to participate. There’s no need to put your head underwater, but you should feel comfortable letting go of the pool edge and walking around in the water independently. If you need extra support, one-on-one sessions may be a better option until you gain more confidence in the water.
